school history

Founded in 1847, Bombay Scottish School originated as the Scottish Female Orphanage in Byculla. A similar institution for boys was established in 1855, and they merged in 1859 as ‘The Bombay Male and Female Orphanage’, later renamed ‘The Bombay Scottish Orphanage’ in 1863. The Bombay Scottish Orphanage Society was officially formed in 1867. It relocated to Mahim in 1878 and, despite its Scottish roots, now welcomes students from all communities.

In commemoration of 150 years of existence, the school at Powai was established as an extension of the educational facilities to the community in its sesquicentennial year, 1997. Bombay Scottish School, Powai, is affiliated with the ICSE Board.
